Lenawee County, MI – The tornado that touched-down in the Riga area in 2021 was a reminder of the impact that severe weather can have on our lives…and several state agencies are calling for participation in a statewide tornado drill later this week.
The Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division is calling for the drill to take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 23rd.
Businesses, organizations, families, and individuals are encouraged to engage, but are not required to do so.
To be ready for a tornado:
- Know the difference: Tornado Watch means conditions exist for a tornado to develop; Tornado Warning means a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar.
- Develop an emergency preparedness kit
- Conduct regular tornado drills.
- Stay tuned to media broadcasts for news on changing weather conditions or approaching storms.
Lenawee County Central Dispatch in coordination with the Lenawee County Fire Chief’s will conduct a tornado siren test on Thursday, March 24th at 5:55 pm.
Lenawee County Emergency Management Coordinator Craig Tanis said in a news release that while the state test is Wednesday at 1:00 pm, the county has always conducted their test on Thursday at 5:55 pm due to limited staffing during the day at paid on call fire departments.
The test will be postponed if there is a threat of severe weather during the scheduled time of the test.
