Adrian, MI – An informational discussion between a local investor and the Lenawee County Board of Commissioners took place during Wednesday’s regularly scheduled Board meeting about the proposed “Phoenix Project” in Tecumseh.
Commissioners were briefed by Administrators about what exactly they would be voting on at the upcoming Special Meeting next Wednesday at 7pm in the Old County Courthouse. They will, essentially, be voting on the feasibility of the project itself (if the area could support it economically and if it could generate revenue/demand for the proposed project. The other aspect they will be voting on is whether they feel it is an environmentally suitable location.
The latter is a concern for local residences in Lenawee County, highlighting concerns with the old Tecumseh Products site off of North Evans Street…and the possible contamination at the 50+ acre parcel.
WLEN News has received communications from Adrian residents, and others in Lenawee, about the project being located in Tecumseh in the first place. They expressed concern about having County taxpayer dollars going towards the project…which they feel would disproportionately benefit the City of Tecumseh at the expense of communities such as Morenci.
County Administration commissioned studies to be completed about the Phoenix Project. These documents showed that the concept would be sustainable in Lenawee, and would benefit the area as a whole…supporting different restaurants, retail shops, and hotels. Being located in Tecumseh, according to the documents, would draw-in people from more populated areas of the state, and possibly Ohio.
Because of ever-changing labor and supply costs, the projected cost of the project is not known at this time, but it is safe to say that it will cost millions of dollars.
The prospective private investor, local entrepreneur and business owner, Bill Leisenring, was at the meeting to talk to the Commissioners about the “Phoenix Project.” He went through his extensive business background, and the reason as to why he wants to support the project. Leisenring, a resident of Tecumseh, spoke with WLEN News after the informational discussion. He elaborated on why he likes the Tecumseh Products location…
Earlier this summer, the County announced that the campus…if constructed… will house events, businesses, organizations, and recreational activities.
