Macon Twp., Lenawee County – The Macon Township Board of Trustees voted 3-2 Monday night to approve a special land use permit for a solar farm.

The outdoor meeting drew-in a crowd of easily over 100 people to the Macon Twp. Hall. The public comment section that took place prior to the vote brought out arguments from both sides of the fence. The farm will be constructed by Mustang Mile LLC, with ownership to be turned over to Consumers Energy.

The campus covers over 1,000 acres of agricultural-zoned land (per documents on the township website, around 300 of those acres will be used for actual solar panels).

Advocates for the project talked about the benefits from renewable energy, freedom for the people who own the land to do what they (legally) want to do with it, additional income for farmers, and increased taxes.

People in the meeting against the project spoke to the noise the solar farm will generate, environmental impacts, and transparency throughout the process.
