Medina Twp., Lenawee County – A search and rescue has turned into a recovery effort for a man who fell through the ice on Durfee Lake, south of Hudson Friday night.

Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office Captain Jacob Pifer told WLEN News that four people were out on the lake and fell through at around 7pm. Three of them were able to get out.

Hudson Fire Department Second Captain Brent Crater said that they were given information from the three that climbed out of the water about where, roughly, they all fell through. Crater told WLEN News that first responders found one big open area in the ice and started the search and rescue from there. Firefighters used water rescue suits, and a drone was utilized to improve their chances of finding the man.

The search lasted for about an hour and a half. At that time, the search was called off and was then deemed a recovery. Captain Pifer told WLEN News on the scene that the missing individual was a 24 year old, but did not have any further information Friday night.

Crater said that they were not sure how thick the ice was where the four people fell in, and the three that got out did not give information as to why they were on the lake in the first place.

One of the individuals was taken to the hospital for treatment of possible hypothermia.

The Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team was called out to the lake to plot a plan to search the ice and water Saturday morning. Captain Pifer said that there will be personnel monitoring the lake throughout the night in case he shows up.

Pifer said that the hour and a half search is what they are trained for when in that situation.

No additional information on the four people who fell through the ice was given Friday night.

Hudson, Addison, Jefferson, and Morenci Fire Departments responded to the scene. They were assisted by the Hudson Police Department and the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office.
