Adrian, MI – There will be no backyard chickens in the Adrian City limits after the Commission voted down an ordinance that would allow them, 5-2.

Despite strict rules about how many chickens you could have and other zoning requirements, the majority of the Commission voiced concerns.

They talked about the City’s resources that would be used to enforce the ordinance, how chickens could interfere with the efforts to reduce blight in Adrian, and the likelihood of it passing on a city-wide ballot…. which most thought it would not pass.

The Commissioners that voted in favor of urban chickens argued that ordinances similar to the one proposed here have been successful in places like Albion. They also said that it would not affect the value of homes in Adrian, based on their research.

During the virtual meeting earlier this week, they observed that this is one of the more contentious topics that they have had to tackle while serving the City. Multiple Commissioners said that they have received an influx of emails and phone calls from residents… both in favor of and against chickens in the city of Adrian.

Brad Watson, Allen Heldt, Lad Strayer, Gordon Gauss, and Mayor Angie Heath voted against the ordinance…. and Commissioners Mary Roberts and Kelly Castleberry voted in favor of it.
