Adrian, MI – The preventive measures Adrian College put in place to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 have resulted in zero positive cases on campus as of noon, Monday, Feb. 1. Adrian College had only two students in quarantine at the time from having possibly been in contact with someone infected with the virus.
Adrian College required all of its students to provide a negative COVID-19 test before returning from holiday break, and the mandate kept 29 positive cases off campus.
Adrian College President Jeffrey Docking sent out a video to students thanking them for doing their part by wearing masks, staying socially distanced and limiting social gatherings.
“Our students have done a great job of following our guidelines,” Docking said. “Obviously, washing their hands and wearing their masks have made a big difference. They understand, if they want in-person instruction and uninterrupted athletics, they have to follow our preparedness plan.”
As of February 1, not a single Adrian College faculty member has tested positive for COVID-19.
“It’s been just about a year and we are still at zero positive cases for faculty,” Andrea Milner, Adrian College vice president and dean of academic affairs, said. “I think that’s amazing, wonderful news!”
There have been 3,081 on-campus Helix COVID-19 tests done to date along with 166 on-campus ProMedica COVID-19 tests.
An additional 2,726 on-campus athletic surveillance rapid antigen tests to date with 42 rapid antigen tests conducted in the Student Health Clinic.
Adrian College Student Health Center Director, Dr. Emily Kist, said the clinic has plenty of tests for anyone who is symptomatic or has been exposed to the virus.
“The clinic just received an order of an additional 10,000 rapid COVID-19 tests. And, the Lenawee County Health Department supplied us with 600 more. So, we’re looking good,” Kist, said.
The Bulldogs’ athletic teams are being tested on a regular basis according to NCAA guidelines, and any student feeling ill can request a COVID-19 rapid test from the College’s Student Health Center.
Precautionary plans are currently being made for spring break, beginning 5 p.m., on February 26. All students leaving campus will again be required to provide a negative COVID-19 test before returning to campus on March 8.
“Our goal is to give our students as normal a college experience as possible with in-person classes, sports and just being with their friends,” Docking said. “All of that is really important to us. So, if our students do their part, we will do ours and give them what they so desperately desire.”
