Adrian, MI – Adrian Center for the Arts Special Programs Director Taina Mantey has been named the Elementary Art Educator of the Year by the Michigan Art Education Association.
Mantey has been teaching art kindergarten through high school, for 30 years at Britton Deerfield Schools in Britton. She also plans the ACA annual professional development camp for MAEA members and has been an ACA resident artist since its founding in 2015.
Mantey was awarded during the MAEA annual conference held virtually in November. Awardees are nominated by their teacher colleagues, and she was nominated by AHS Art Teacher Annie Howard. She has led the ACA in hosting the visual arts portion of the Lenawee Intermediate School District’s Fine Art Festival where more than 70 students converge on campus for workshops every May. Mantey has also led her students in community projects such as the mural erected at the Lenawee County Fairgrounds last year. She also participates in the ACA Side by Side program which pairs high school artists with ACA member artists for a six-month mentoring program.
The MAEA was founded in 1964 to support Michigan art educators and further art education. The MAEA has recognized an educator of the year since its founding and now recognizes an elementary, middle and high school educator.
