ADRIAN, MI – Three dogs escaped a kitchen fire in an apartment building in Adrian Saturday evening.

Crews from Adrian City, Adrian Township, and Madison Township responded to the call around 7pm to the apartment in Rivers Bend, off of Beecher Street.

When firefighters made entry into the lobby area, they observed a light haze, but no flames. When they entered the apartment, the smoke thickened as they discovered the kitchen fire. They extinguished it rather quickly, and made contact with the occupants…who were not home at the time. No injuries were reported.

Adrian Fire Department Captain, Eddie Mathis, told WLEN News on the scene that the smoke alarms in the building did not go off. He said that there was a risk of the fire spreading to adjacent apartments.

He stressed the importance of testing smoke alarms.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
