A brick wall fell into the construction site of a future multi-purpose building in the Village of Deerfield on Monday night. One of the future intents of the building was to be a medical marijuana processing center. WLEN News spoke with Shane Dusseau, the owner of the construction site property, Tuesday afternoon. He said that in addition to the medical marijuana side, the building will have apartments and other store fronts.
Dusseau said that the collapse happened when crews were working on the site adjacent to the building when the wall fell. Dusseau said that they were not near the wall when it collapsed, and that the tenants of the apartment on the second floor were not home at the time. He reported that there were no injuries.
Dusseau told WLEN News that he called the Deerfield Village Building Inspector, Village Manager, and Village Planner. The Building Inspector said that the structure is now uninhabitable, and had Dusseau board up the doors.
This incident could delay the project now because insurance companies are involved.
Dusseau told WLEN News that “…we obviously didn’t do anything negligent to make the building fall.”
An OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) Inspector was called to the site because they received a complaint that the crew was working in dangerous conditions. The Inspector was in the village, working on a follow-up to the complaint, when WLEN News was on scene.
