Adrian Plaza Condemned by City

After the building located on West Maumee Street has suffered from a leaky roof and other water damage for months, The Adrian Plaza has been condemned by the City of Adrian.

This is a photo of the storage room of the Family Dollar. Standing water can be seen in the foreground of the photo. Employees told WLEN News that the water is from a combination of a leaky ceiling and water getting in from a door in the rear of the building.
Employees use bins to catch water leaking from the ceiling in the storage area.
Pictured is the inside of the door to the employee break room. Water damage is evident on the door and ceiling inside the room, with a piece of the ceiling actually falling down into the space.

This condemnation has forced Family Dollar and the Adrian Barbell Company to stop allowing customers into their business as of 5pm today (Friday). This does not necessarily mean that the tenets of the building must leave.

WLEN News obtained contact information from Family Dollar for the individual that they were told was their landlord, but when WLEN News made contact with the individual, they said that they did not own the property.

Representatives from the City of Adrian and the Plaza met Friday afternoon to talk about the issues. City Attorney Tamaris Henegan told WLEN News that a notice of violation was issued on November 22nd, 2019…then a civil infraction was issued on January 8th, 2020.

There is no timeline requiring the owners to bring the building back up to code, but according to Henegan, they appeared to want to cooperate.

If they do not, further action could be taken by the City of Adrian.
