ProMedica Bixby Hospital Offers New Breast Surgery Technology

ADRIAN, Mich. – ProMedica Bixby Hospital is now providing a simple, more effective method for marking tumors before breast surgery. The device, called Magseed, addresses complications that are associated with traditional wire localization methods such as discomfort or risk of infection.

Smaller than a grain of rice, Magseed can be placed into a tumor up to thirty days before the patient’s surgery, causing no discomfort to the patient. During surgery, a magnetic probe detects the Magseed, guiding the surgeon to the tumor. This process provides a more accurate way to remove cancer tissue and preserve healthy tissue.

“This new technology will enhance the care we provide to breast care patients at ProMedica Bixby Hospital. We are pleased to offer this device and provide a more comfortable and accurate alternative for marking tumors undergoing breast surgery,” says Jeremy French, Director of Radiology and Women’s Health Center at ProMedica Bixby and Herrick Hospitals.
