Michigan House Approves Press Box Legislation; Goes Back to Senate

The Michigan House this week approved legislation supported by State Representative Bronna Kahle to exempt outside viewing areas such as athletic field press boxes, from unnecessary heating requirements.

Kahle cast her vote to remove the state construction code requirement that outdoor sporting event viewing areas include heating systems. She says the burdensome requirement to heat the structures when they are infrequently occupied creates cost-prohibitive problems for many schools across the state, including Madison School District.

Representative Kahle has worked closely with state Senator Dale Zorn on the plan since Madison School District Superintendent Ryan Rowe brought the issue to their attention.

Rowe says the district has run into hurdles regarding the installation of a heating system and the cost of the project has been estimated at $250,000.

Senate Bill 294 now returns to the Senate for further consideration.
