Three area school districts have special elections coming up on Tuesday, May 7th. Here’s what you need to know:
Morenci Area Schools-
MORENCI AREA SCHOOLS
OPERATING MILLAGE RENEWAL PROPOSAL
This proposal will allow the school district to continue to levy the statutory rate of not to exceed 18 mills on all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, required for the school district to receive its revenue per pupil foundation allowance.
Shall the limitation on the amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, in Morenci Area Schools, Lenawee County, Michigan, be increased by 18 mills ($18.00 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation) for the year 2019, to provide funds for operating purposes; the estimate of the revenue the school district will collect if the millage is approved and levied in 2019 is approximately $560,374 (this is a renewal of millage that expired with the 2018 tax levy).
Qualified and registered voters within the Morenci Area School District can vote at 118 Orchard Street in Morenci on Tuesday, May 7th.
Onsted Community Schools-
ONSTED COMMUNITY SCHOOLS
BONDING PROPOSAL
Shall Onsted Community Schools, Lenawee County, Michigan, borrow the sum of not to exceed Twelve Million Eight Hundred Thousand Dollars ($12,800,000) and issue its general obligation unlimited tax bonds therefor, in one or more series, for the purpose of:
partially remodeling, furnishing and refurnishing, and equipping and re-equipping school facilities; acquiring, installing and equipping school facilities with instructional technology; erecting, furnishing and equipping additions to the high school building; purchasing school buses; and developing, improving and equipping athletic facilities and the site.
The estimated millage that will be levied for the proposed bonds in 2019, under current law, is 1.10 mills ($1.10 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation), for a 0.31 mill net increase over the prior year’s levy. The estimated simple average annual millage anticipated to be required to retire this bond debt is 1.99 mills ($1.99 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation).
The school district does not expect to borrow from the State to pay debt service on the bonds.
Qualified and registered voters within the Onsted Community School District can cast their vote at 9990 West M-50 in Onsted on Tuesday.
Waldron Area Schools-
WALDRON AREA SCHOOLS
SINKING FUND MILLAGE PROPOSAL
Shall the limitation on the amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property in Waldron Area Schools, Hillsdale and Lenawee Counties, Michigan, be increased by and the board of education be authorized to levy not to exceed 1 mill ($1.00 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation) for a period of 6 years, 2019 to 2024, inclusive, to create a sinking fund for the construction or repair of school buildings, for school security improvements, for the acquisition or upgrading of technology and all other purposes authorized by law; the estimate of the revenue the school district will collect if the millage is approved and levied in 2019 is approximately $68,669.
Qualified and registered voters within Medina Township and the Waldron Area School District must go to 112 East Center Street in Waldron to vote on Tuesday.
