This is the statement put out by the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office on their Facebook page Wednesday afternoon:
“The Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of a scam using the Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff’s Office Staff by name. The caller identifies themselves as a Sheriff Employee and advises that there is a warrant for the person. As of now no one has fallen for this scam and we would like to keep it that way. We have no way of tracing these numbers because of the elaborate spoofing capabilities of the scammers.
The Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office will not call you and tell you that there is a warrant for your arrest! First of all, we have no way of verifying who we are talking to, that is why if someone calls the Sheriff’s Office asking if they have a warrant we direct them to the Court or to our main office. Be safe, if you are in doubt of the validity of any call do not provide any information and hang up.”
