The United Way of Monroe/Lenawee Counties has received word from the State Set-Aside Committee for Phase 35 of the Emergency Food and Shelter Program that the Lenawee County jurisdiction has been awarded nearly $12,000 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs. This is an increase of just over $900 from last year’s amount.
The funds will be distributed to local agencies to help with food and shelter programs that serve individuals and families. Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds originate from the National Board chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The National Board consists of representatives from The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Council of Jewish Federations, Catholic Charities, USA, National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA and the United Way of America who provides the administrative staff and functions as the fiscal agent. The Board distributes funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.
A Local Board, consisting of several members of the community, governs the Lenawee County jurisdictions. In Lenawee County those organizations include Lenawee County Department of Health and Human Services, United Way of Monroe/Lenawee County, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, and representatives of the Council of Churches. In the past, Lenawee County has distributed Emergency Food and Shelter funds to The Daily Bread of Lenawee, The Salvation Army, St. Vincent DePaul Society Food, Brooklyn Food Pantry, Family Counseling and Children Services of Lenawee, and Housing Help of Lenawee.
