Former Adrian College professor and Jeopardy! Champion Stephanie Jass pleaded guilty to a felony on Wednesday, June 13th. She admitted to unauthorized access to a computer, program or network, punishable by a maximum of five years in prison and a large fine. The Lenawee County Prosecutor’s Office dropped a second charge of using a computer to commit a crime, records show.
A campus-wide password reset took place at Adrian College in the spring of 2017. Jass used this as an opportunity to hack email accounts to see messages sent to or received by President Jeffrey Docking and outgoing Vice President Agnes Caldwell, according to a Michigan State Police report.
Jass, once an assistant professor of American history, was “terminated with cause,” a college spokesman said in January.
The college issued a statement after Jass’ plea, saying the school is pleased to be able to bring the matter to a close.
“Adrian College wishes to sincerely thank the Michigan State Police, specifically its Cyber Command Center, and the Lenawee County Prosecutor’s Office for their thorough investigation and for ultimately bringing charges and a conviction in this crime,” it states. “Privacy rights are a fundamental principle of our American democracy and Adrian College stands with those who protect these rights.”
Lenawee County Circuit Judge Margaret Noe is to sentence Jass on July 20th.
