State Rep. Bronna Kahle testified before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in support of a plan to require headlights be turned on during inclement weather to increase safety on Michigan roads.

Kahle’s bill will require headlights to be on during periods of rain, snow, fog or other similar conditions, and at all times when the windshield wipers are activated.

Under current law, headlights are required to be on from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise.

“Simply requiring headlights to come on when it rains or snows will increase safety and potentially save lives,” said Kahle. “As the former director of the Adrian Senior Center, I heard frequently that this would improve visibility on our roadways. Wipers on-Headlights on!”

Paul Dye from Adrian testified in support of the bill.

Over 30 states require the use of headlights when driving in adverse weather conditions or when the windshield wipers are in use according to the AAA’s Digest of Motor Laws.

House Bill 5237 remains under consideration by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
