Four members of an AdvancEd school accreditation team spent three days at Adrian High School speaking to staff, students, parents, community members, and administration about the teaching and learning along with the building’s school improvement process. “The last accreditation visit took place five years ago and much has changed for the positive at AHS since that last visit,” said Derrick Richards, Curriculum Director for APS. “The outside review process takes into consideration a strong protocol focused on systemic, sustainable, and purposeful processes in place in all of the 32,000 institutions across the country that are AdvancEd accredited and provides us valuable feedback to continue to make improvements for our students.”
AdvancEd examines three domains consisting of Leadership, Learning, and Resources within a school. The visiting team examines how these domains are implemented and the progress that is made as part of a continuous improvement process.
Following interviews with 105 individuals, 12 focus groups, and 29 classroom observations, reviewers provided accolades to AHS in the areas of:
- Depth, range, and extensiveness of curricular options for students
- Caring, committed, and hard-working staff
- Commitment to serve a diverse population of learners
- Strong global awareness enhanced through the building’s foreign exchange program
- Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Program (Maple PRIDE)
Teacher and School Improvement Team Co-Chair Ryan Bills said, “It was great to get affirmation from this outside team of professionals that AHS is doing great things. It was also outstanding to hear that parents and community members recognize and are proud of the many curricular opportunities that AHS offers over other schools.”
According to Ron Jacobs, AHS Principal, “this visit helped to validate the changes that have taken place as we work to advance student achievement and provides a solid road map for us to use as we take the next steps in our journey to provide even stronger student achievement opportunities.”
Jacobs continued, “We start a new five year process with a framework to further enhance student achievement with systematic processes, a strong desire to build stronger communication mechanisms, and most importantly linked and aligned initiatives to improve the overall success of our students.”
The full report to the building will be released by AdvancEd within 45 days.
