Former Lenawee Area Vocational-Technical Education Center Principal, Bruce Stephens, Passes at the Age of 81

Bruce Whitney Stephens was born May 15, 1937 in Defiance, Ohio. On April 20, 1968, he married Rhea Fischer at North Blissfield Immanuel Lutheran Church. They just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Stephens graduated from Oakwood High School in Oakwood, Ohio. He attended Adrian College where he received his BA degree. He was an SAE Fraternity member and played basketball for the school. Stephens was inducted into the Adrian College Hall of Fame. He received his Master’s Degree from Siena Heights University and a specialist degree from Eastern Michigan University. Bruce started teaching in Ohio and then Madison School district as a science teacher, driver’s education teacher, counselor and athletic director.

Stephens enjoyed gardening, traveling, playing handball and golf, running 7 marathons, including the Boston marathon, and for over 40 years was part of the Adrian High School football chain gang.

Stephens served on the following organizations: The Noon Rotary Club, the YMCA of Lenawee County (where he served as president), the Lenawee Country Club (where he served as president), and the Red Cross.

Bruce was instrumental to the beginning of the Vo-Tech Center of Lenawee (now the LISD Tech Center) and later became principal until his retirement in 2001.

Stephens passed away Saturday, July 14th, 2018 surrounded by his family.

A memorial service will be at 10:30am on Wednesday, July 18th at First United Methodist Church in Adrian. Arrangements were handled by the Wagley Funeral Home, Adrian.
