DEVIL’S LAKE — Lenawee County residents have a chance to earn their boater safety certification free of charge this weekend.

The Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office and Devil’s Lake Watersports will host a free boater safety course Saturday, June 13th, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Devil’s Lake Watersports in Manitou Beach.

The class will be taught by Sheriff’s Deputy Jerry Lawson, a certified DNR Recreational Safety Instructor. Topics include boating laws, navigation rules, crash prevention, fueling procedures, environmental concerns, and water safety.

Michigan law requires many boat and personal watercraft operators to complete a certified safety course. Participants must pass a written exam with a score of at least 75 percent to receive certification.

Books, materials, and lunch will be provided. Registration is available through Devil’s Lake Watersports
