Onsted, MI – Well over 100 people were in attendance at Wednesday night’s Cambridge Township Planning Commission meeting last night, and 20 of them spoke during the Public Hearing about a proposed ordinance about quarries.

A private company has purchased land on either side of US-12 near Killarney Highway and submitted an application to dig a gravel pit on the land for up to ten years…then make the area a lake and ultimately have homes built around it.

Cambridge Township’s legal council has said that the current ordinances regarding mining and extraction are outdated. The township trustees placed a moratorium on mining operations in December last year, and it has since been in place.

At Wednesday’s meeting, the public….and planning commission…were presented with a draft ordinance. Many members appreciated the commission ‘beefing-up’ the document, but they wanted more specifics.

Residents talked about many concerns, including health for nearby residents, decreased property values, tarnishing the natural beauty of the Irish Hills, traffic issues on US-12, and the need for a gravel pit in the first place.

Cambridge Township Planning Commission Chairman, Tim Kissel, talked to WLEN News after the meeting. There are two ordinances being discussed at once…one with the Planning Commission, and the other with the Board of Trustees…

A sub-committee was formed to have meetings with their ordinance-writing consultant to discuss possible alterations to the current draft. If the Planning Commission approves changes, the document will be sent to Region Two for their consideration…then brought before the Board of Trustees for a possible vote.
