National Weather Service Confirms EF-1 Tornado in Riga Twp

Riga Twp., Lenawee County – The National Weather Service has confirmed that one EF-1 tornado was in southeast Lenawee County Sunday night.

The report by the NWS said that the estimated peak wind was 90 mph, traveled 2.7 miles on the ground, and was 125 yards wide at its maximum width.

The tornado, that caused significant damage to homes, knocked down trees, and caused multiple power outages, touched-down at 9:23pm.

The survey summary said that it made contact with the ground south of Cemetery Road and East of Silberhorn Highway… heading east northeast. The tornado damaged at least five homes, four outbuildings, three barns, and numerous trees.

As it worked its way towards the Lenawee/Monroe County line, the tornado lifted prior to Rodesiler Highway between Simpson and Stadler Road.

The Sunday tornado was the first to hit Lenawee County since June 6th, 2010, which was an EF-1 northwest of Adrian.
