Over a dozen turkeys died in a barn fire at Mohr Farm on Thursday.

Multiple Lenawee County Fire Departments responded to the Rome Township farm, including Cambridge Township, Madison Township, Adrian City, Adrian Township, Addison Village, Clayton Village. Sand Lake provided station coverage for Cambridge.

Cambridge Township Assistant Fire Chief, Jeff Armstrong, told WLEN News that they started fighting the blaze at around 11:30am.

He said that the fire initially burned in the lower level of the barn, and spread to the loft. Armstrong also said that firefighters initially tried to fight the fire from inside the structure, but were forced to operate from the exterior.

Armstrong told WLEN News that fire crews were able to get some of the poultry out of the barn, but some could not be saved. He said that 14 turkeys were saved, but 14 perished.

No other livestock were in the barn at the time, but the firefighters and property owners had to protect livestock in neighboring barns.

Although the official cause has not been determined, Assistant Chief Armstrong was told that it might have been an electrical fire, stemming from an electrical box.

The building is a total loss.
