The Columbia Township Police Department is investigating a food tampering incident after a syringe was found in a jar of mayonnaise bought at a Dollar General in Brooklyn.

An area resident reported the possible food tampering on Monday, September 16th, the same day the mayonnaise was purchased.

A short time after arriving home, the resident removed the protective seal and placed the jar in the refrigerator. The resident’s husband then went to use it, when he felt the knife he was using hit something hard. Closer inspection revealed a syringe pushed down into the middle of the jar of Miracle Whip.

Dollar General was notified, and management immediately removed the remaining exact product from the shelf. The product is now being retained by the Columbia Township Police Department.

The FBI was contacted Monday night, as well as the Food and Drug Administration.

The incident is under investigation.
