Last-Minute Study Session: Tuesday’s Primary Election

There will be a full ballot for this years election season, starting Tuesday, August 7th with the Primary Election. 

Proposals:

There is one county-wide proposal up for vote, and it is a re-authorization of a millage, which expired in 2017. This will be a six year millage, which will start in December of this year, to provide funds for the operation, maintenance and capital costs of the Lenawee Medical Care Facility.

In Deerfield Township there is a road proposal, fire equipment, and fire department operations renewal on the ballot.

Dover Township has a road millage renewal and an advanced life support millage renewal to vote on.

Hudson Township will vote on a fire millage renewal to previously approved millage rates and an ambulance service renewal to previously approved millage rates as well.

Medina Township has a roads and bridges renewal to previously approved millage rates is up for a vote.

In Palmyra Township there is a amended zoning ordinance referendum, and fire department operation renewal on the ballot.

Ridgeway Township will vote on Proposition 1 and 2, which are essentially millage rates renewals.  

Riga Township has a road improvement fund renewal and Headly Rollback along with a fire millage Headly Rollback.

In Tecumseh Township there is a fire, police and ambulance renewal.

Woodstock Township will vote on a renewal with no increase for Advanced Life Support Ambulance Service.

Waldron Area Schools is voting on a operating millage renewal proposal.

Village of Britton has an operating millage rollback offset proposal to vote on.

US Senate:

Lenawee County’s United States Senator seat is up for grabs in November. Debbie Stabenow is running unopposed by fellow democrats. There are two republicans running against each other in this primary, and they are John James and Sandy Pensler. Stabenow lives in East Lansing, while James and Pensler reside in Lansing. The winner in the general election in November will serve a 6-year term.  

7th District US Representative:

The two-year term for the 7th district of Michigan in US Congress will be decided in November… but first, the primary election. Republican Tim Walberg is running unopposed by anyone in his party. Democrats Gretchen Driskell and Steven Friday are competing for the democratic vote. The winner between Driskell, who lives in Saline, and Friday, who lives in Dexter, will compete against Walberg, a Jackson resident, in the General Election.

Michigan 57th District State Representative:

Another component of Tuesday’s Primary Election is the 57th District State of Michigan Representative. Two candidates are fighting for the Lansing seat. Republican Bronna Kahle, from Adrian, and Democratic candidate Amber Pedersen, from Adrian as well, are running to fill the seat for a two year term.

Michigan 65th District State Representative:

Several candidates are running for the 2 year term of the 65th District Michigan State Representative. Republicans Todd Brittain, Sarah Lightner, Carl Rudolph Rice Jr, and Matt Eyer are all running. One Democrat, Terri McKinnon, will have their name on the ballot. Also, Jason B. Rees, a Libertarian, is running for the seat. The 65th District Michigan State Representative includes Cambridge Township.

Michigan 17th District State Senator:

The 17th District State Senator seat will be on the ballot. Republican Dale Zorn, from Ida, Democrat Bill LaVoy, from Monroe, and Libertarian Chad McNamara, from Carleton will all be competing for the 4-year term.

Lenawee County Commissioner:

Of all the Lenawee County Commissioner seats up for grabs on Tuesday, only two districts have two candidates officially running.

The 4th District, which includes Dover, Fairfield, Madison, and Seneca Township features incumbent Republican Dawn L. Bales and challenging Democrat Charles S. Rodebaugh.

The 7th District represents Blissfield, Deerfield, Ogden, Palmyra, Ridgeway, and Riga Townships. The race has incumbent Robert Knoblauch going up against challenging Democrat James Shuster. The winner will serve a 2 year term.

Lenawee County Probate Court Judge

Tuesday’s Primary Election will also feature voting for Probate Court Judge of Lenawee County. Kristi Drake, Catherine Sala, Todd Morgan, and incumbent Gregg Iddings.
