Steve Barkway got his
start in radio as a college student in 1972. He
graduated from Adrian College in 1976 with a BA degree
in Communication Arts. Since then, Steve has worked as a
News Director and a beat reporter as he moved around to
a couple other markets in order to stay close to his
wife, Laurie, who was a medical student at the time.
Steve returned to WLEN when they decided to come back to
their Lenawee County roots. He is a proud alum of Onsted
High School. He became Sports Director for WLEN, after a
stint as the Sales Manager, and then joined Bob Butler
on The Wake Up Show. A couple of co-hosts later and you
hear him as part of WLEN’s award-winning morning show…Mornings
with Jerry & Steve.
Steve really enjoys time with his
wife and family, spending time on the lake, or taking
trips to Florida or around Michigan. He and his wife are
members of Tecumseh First Presbyterian Church. Steve
says he's on the "second string" of the church
Praise Band as a drummer. Of course, he loves sports!
Especially softball, baseball, football and basketball.
He's a coach too - coaching high school softball. During
the basketball season, you can find him as the
"voice" of Adrian College Womens basketball as
a P.A. announcer. During the football season, Steve is
the play by play man for Adrian College Football on WLEN.
And if he had to name some teams? Tigers, Lions, Red
Wings, and Pistons all the way! He’s a Wolverine at
heart, but since Laurie went to MSU, he’s learned to
be a Spartan too.
One of his all time favorite
memories at WLEN was when he was a helicopter traffic
reporter in a partnership with MIS. He also remembers
doing play by play on WLEN during the Hudson Tigers
record breaking 72 game winning streak. Steve also loves
doing radio commercials especially using character
voices when he gets the chance.
Some of Steve’s favorites
include Double Chocolate Fudge, iced tea, steak &
lobster, corn on the cob, ribs, scalloped potatoes,
strawberry rhubarb pies, 1966 Pontiac Lemans, Corvettes,
Mustangs, NFL, NASCAR and the comedy of Steve Martin,
Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller, Sandra Bullock or Chris
Farley just to name a few. Also Pink Panther and Monty
Python - even Pixar movies. All time favorites: Jonathan
Winters, Rich Little, Bill Cosby, Johnny Carson, Tim
Conway and Red Skelton.
