A.   Annual Scholarship for Broadcasting – President of Lenawee Broadcasting, Julie Koehn and Secretary Joyce Koehn developed the John W. Koehn Memorial Scholarship in 1992.  This scholarship gives a one time amount of $1,000.00 to a recipient each year.  It can be used for any post high school education, including community college, university or trade school.  It was developed in cooperation with the International Broadcasters Idea Bank, and is funded solely by Lenawee Broadcasting Company.  Those that are eligible include any employee of child of an employee of an Idea Bank member station.  The recipient must be studying in a broadcast related field.  The scholarship is judged annually by a group of 6 broadcasters from the United States and Canada. To date we have awarded 17 scholarships totaling $17,000.00

B.   ATHENA Lenawee Scholarship Program-WLEN is one of four businesses to annually fund this scholarship given to a young woman in Lenawee County to pursue post high school study.  It is a one time $1,000.00 scholarship facilitated through the Lenawee Education Foundation.

C.   ATHENA Aide-WLEN Radio President and General Manager Julie Koehn developed this program through ATHENA Lenawee to start a non- traditional scholarship program.  This program will fund continuing assistance and education to women who find themselves in a position to need training or assistance that they cannot afford for themselves.  These women may be at risk or not.

 D.  Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation Internship Program.  WLEN Radio has participated in the program since it’s inception and has hosted 7 interns thru this program.  One has been hired by the station as a full time employee.  This program is funded by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation and participating stations.  2003 was the first year for the program, and WLEN Radio was one of 6 sites in Michigan.

E.    Annually – Internship Program – WLEN Radio has had an on going internship program for more than 20 years, and it exists year round.  We have interns from local high schools, the Lenawee Intermediate school district, Adrian College and Siena Height University.  These programs are both in programming and in marketing, promotions and sales.  We take interns year round as the interests arise.  Our interns have gone on to careers in sales, morning show personalities in middle markets, and careers in politics.  Station personnel involved in our internship program include, Julie Koehn, President, Lori Sallows, Promotions Director, Dale Gaertner, Program Director, Steve Barkway, Sports Director, Tonya Lightner, Production Director and Tim Hernandez, News Director.  For 2009/2010 we hosted two interns in our promotions department.  One in the summer of 2009, one in the winter/spring of 2009/2010.  We also hosted two interns in our programming department in 2009/2010, one in production and one in news.  In addition, we hosted several middle school and high school students in a job shadowing program.

  1.  Two WLEN Employees are members of the advisory board for the multi media program at our local vocational and technical center, (Lenawee Vo-tech).  This is an entirely voluntary.  Our Production Director, Tonya Lightner, has been involved as an Advisory Board member and youth mentor.  In 2009 she went above and beyond, committing to hosting every student in the class for 4 hours of onsite “On The Job” Training at WLEN.  We hosted 1 to 2 students at a time for 4 hours of hands on, on-air and production experience.  45 students were hosted.  They wrote and produced PSA’s….several of which aired on WLEN.   This was a huge commitment for our team, but they stepped it up because education of future broadcasters is important to us!!!
