#3. Description of supplemental outreach
initiatives:
A.
Annual
Scholarship for Broadcasting President of Lenawee Broadcasting, Julie Koehn
and Secretary Joyce Koehn developed the John W. Koehn Memorial Scholarship in
1992. This scholarship gives a one time
amount of $1,000.00 to a recipient each year.
It can be used for any post high school education, including community
college, university or trade school. It
was developed in cooperation with the International Broadcasters Idea Bank, and
is funded by Lenawee Broadcasting Company.
Those that are eligible include any employee of child of an employee of
an Idea Bank member station. The
recipient must be studying in a broadcast related field. The scholarship is judged annually by a group
of 6 broadcasters from the United States and Canada. To date we have awarded 18
scholarships totaling $18,000.00. The
2010 scholarship was given to a single mom in Tennessee who is working full
time at a radio station, raising a family and going to college to finish her
degree for herself and as an example to her children.
B.
ATHENA
Lenawee Scholarship Program-WLEN is one of four businesses to annually fund
this scholarship given to a young woman in Lenawee County to pursue post high
school study. It is a one time $1,000.00
scholarship facilitated through the Lenawee Education Foundation.
C.
ATHENA
Aide-WLEN Radio President and General Manager Julie Koehn developed this
program through ATHENA Lenawee to start a non- traditional scholarship
program. This program funds continuing
assistance and education to women who find themselves in a position to need
training or assistance that they cannot afford for themselves, it is meant to
fund elimination of road blocks to self sufficiency and continuing education.. These women may be
at risk or not.
D.
Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation Internship Program. WLEN Radio has participated in the program
since its inception and has hosted 8 interns thru
this program. One has been hired by the
station as a full time employee. This
program is funded by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation and
participating stations. 2003 was the
first year for the program, and WLEN Radio was one of 6 sites in Michigan.
E.
Annually Internship Program WLEN Radio has
had an on going internship program for more than 20 years, and it exists year
round. We have interns from local high
schools, the Lenawee Intermediate school district, Adrian College and Siena
Height University. These programs are
both in programming and in marketing, promotions and sales. We take interns year round as the interests
arise. Our interns have gone on to
careers in sales, morning show personalities in middle markets, and careers in
politics. Station personnel involved in
our internship program include, Julie Koehn, President, Lori Sallows, Promotions Director, Dale Gaertner,
Program Director, and Steve Barkway, Sports Director,
For 2010/2011 we hosted three interns in our promotions department. One in the summer of 2010, one in the winter
of 2010/2011, and one currently in the spring of 2011, all three were college
students. We also hosted one intern in
our sport/programming department in 2010/2011.
In addition, we hosted several middle school and high school students in
a job shadowing program.
