Ag Career Day

Students from across lower Michigan explored the high-tech world of agriculture at Ag Career Day. Seventh grade students from Hillsdale and Lenawee counties were given tours and hands-on demonstrations designed to motivate student’s interest in one of many agriculture related careers.

“We are very excited to see such a high participation rate at this event,” said Jim Van Doren, Executive Director of Lenawee Now. “Students are interested in learning about the changing agriculture industry and how they may  play a part in its future. The next great ag-tech pioneer may have been a part of today’s event.”

Students were able to witness technology in action and engage with professionals in a variety of agriculture-related fields at the Lenawee Intermediate School District’s (LISD) Center for a Sustainable Future and the Hudson Dairy. Students then enjoyed an agriculture-themed lunch and brought home a vast amount of knowledge and materials to share with their families.

“Technology has greatly changed the agricultural industry,” explained Van Doren. “Most families will probably be greatly surprised at the many high-tech careers now available. Our region in particular is a place of innovation and development of new cutting-edge technologies due to our rich history in agriculture and our top-notch education system.”

The event was a collaborative effort of Lenawee Now, Lenawee Intermediate School District, Michigan State University Extension, Lenawee Soil Conservation District, and Lenawee County Farm Bureau. Sponsoring organizations include: The Andersons, Greenstone Farm Credit Services, Hudson Dairy, Milk Source, Nutrien, B&M Crop Consulting, Goetz River Farms, Briner Oil Co., First Federal Bank, Kaeb Sales Inc., Buentello Farm  Services, Charles Robinson & Sons, Country Market, Michigan Wheat Program, Region 2 Planning Commission, Greater Ann Arbor Region, and Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Other organizations involved include: Market House, Briskey Brothers, Kellogg’s, Countryside Veterinary Services, Crop Risk Services, Donna Baker & Associates, Genex Cooperative, Great Lakes Crop Tech LLC, MI Dept of Agriculture & Rural Development, Monroe Community College, Precision Ag Services, RCO Law, Sieler’s Lanscape & Design, and United Dairy Industry of Michigan.
