“Today is my last day of work after 24 years of service with the Adrian Fire Department. As I retire, I need to send a few heartfelt thanks.

To the Citizens – I want to thank the citizens I have sworn to protect. I have been with you at times that were often the worst days in your life. I have been there when your home is on fire, when a family member is sick, or when you had an accident. I educated your children, made sure your homes were safe, and held your hand while you grieve. This personal connection with you is one of the most rewarding aspects of the profession and I thank you for letting me be part of your life. I also thank you for the support you provide the fire department and its fire fighters. It means more to us than you can imagine.

City Employees – I would like to thank all city employees. As I advanced through my career I have worked with many of you. I am pleased to have been able to have good relationships with other city employees and departments. Even during tough times, we have worked together to provide the best services to the citizens. These relationships not only make your department stronger, but the entire city stronger. Too often the great work you do go’s unnoticed. Take pride in the work you do and accept my thanks for a job well done.

Fire Department Members – Your support over my 24 years, two as Chief has allowed us to achieve amazing things. Recently, the City Commission supported our ambulance proposal to begin ALS transport full-time. I believe this move will bring needed sustainability to the department. Increased manpower will make everyone safer. Always remember, EVERYONE GOES HOME. The fire department is a family. Saying goodbye to you is the hardest. Many of the firefighters and officers I have worked with on shift are now retired. As my time approaches, I am pleased with the younger generation coming up. They are enthusiastic, committed to serve, and will fill any void created by retirements.

My Family – I want to thank my family for understanding when I could not be home for birthday’s holidays, or important events. Understanding when I got paged out at 3am and when I was away for training. The concern I caused when you knew I was in danger. The patience you had when the stress from the work came home with me. The support they gave me when I needed it, as well as the reality check when I needed it. I look forward to our time together in retirement.

It has been a great ride and I am truly blessed to have been given the opportunity to have a career with the Adrian Fire Department. And now as my career ends, I proudly call myself a retired City of Adrian employee.”
