Recently at Adrian College, the Ahletic Training Program and area first responders coordinated an effort to teach athletic trainers (ATs) about how to react and act to a mass-casualty situation.

“ATs are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. Athletic trainers provide medical services to all types of patients, not just athletes participating in sports, and can work in a variety of job settings (nata.org).”

The athletic training program at Adrian College places great emphasis on emergency preparedness. It is conceivable that a mass casualty incident could unfold at a sporting event, with athletic trainers being the first trained personnel on the scene. Therefore, in an effort to educate athletic training students, they have spent several months planning a large scale emergency medicine simulation. Adrian College coordinated efforts with county, city and township EMS and law enforcement professionals, and anticipated a collaborative interdisciplinary experience for students, staff and faculty.
